FAMILY SUPPORT
Cancer is a “family diagnosis,” affecting spouses, children, parents, and caregivers.
- What it involves: Acknowledging and addressing the needs of the patient’s support network.
- Caregiver Support: Respite care, support groups for caregivers (who often neglect their own needs), and training on how to provide physical and emotional care.
- Support for Children & Teens: Age-appropriate counselling for minors who have a parent or sibling with cancer, and programs to help parents talk to their children about cancer.
- Family Counselling: Mediating family dynamics strained by the pressures of illness and facilitating communication.
- The Goal: To strengthen the family unit as a support system, prevent caregiver burnout, and ensure the emotional health of all members impacted by the disease.
